I've been quiet too long, The time
is now right-
To express how I'm feeling, Please, let me shed now, some light.
I've stood here as long as this country is old,
I've endured deep depression, Drought, famine, and cold.
Grounded in stone, I've been undaunted by years.
I've caused grown men to smile, I've reduced them to tears-
I've stood up to hurricanes, pirates and unruly sailors,
I may have then blinked, yet I never did waiver.
I've been looked up to by kings, Looked down on by saints-
I've been a friend to ship captains, landlubbers first mates-
I've been hope in the night, I've been a herald to dreams.
I've been a journey commenced, To religious oppressed.
But now, things are different, A new tide has come in-
I feel less important, Somewhat a "has been".
I am now much less relevant, As I have been before.
I am looked up to by tourists, At my base now, a store.
Modern technology has shown me the door-
Yet, I refuse to relinquish, My place on this shore.
I stand proud, resolute, My light, still, will shine-
I am a beacon of remembrance, To a more "maritime"
